Paul Donton & Rob Pearson branch out of their usual busy release schedule to drop a juicy minimal 2-track EP for Woodwork. With a steady stream of excellent EPs and remixes constantly arriving on their home labels Bombis Records, Evasive Records, Drugsex Recordings, and Eviltron Music, Paul & Rob are a constant source of tough beats and inventive tech house.
Opening with 'Inspired Look', we get straight to it with twitchy hats and deep vocal rhythms offset by wobbly fx and punctuated with retro cinematic stabs. The groove stays minimal with plenty of space and perpetual bounce. A grouchy bass creeps up and opens into a noisy electric shock sound while some organic vibrating keys keep things pleasant in the background.
'Soak Testing' continues in the same vein, with absurd sounds and steady sparse rhythms. A deep synth makes itself known quietly in the dub zone leaving plenty of room for the percussion hits to get a little more freaky down front. As if by clockwork, the top layer picks up and lays back at the perfect intervals to tease and move the floor.
This EP is indeed an inspired look at a consistently excellent production duo that shows time and again in each one of their collaborations, how two veteran DJ/producers can weave a great story out of virtually any collection of sound fragments...
