Released to critical and public acclaim in May 2015, Oliver Lieb and his imaginatively titled "VY Canis Majoris" lit up the techno galaxy with a twin track offering of rare quality. The title track has since gone on to see a remix release of its own while "WASP-17b" now receives new treatments from Finnish and American stars.
From the southern city of Tampere in Pirkanmaa, Henri Hurtig's influence has far outreached in native Finland. Under his Cid Inc. soubriquet, Hurtig has dominated the underground dance scene with a unique blend of production prowess that has seen his popularity soar and in both studio and live arenas, performing at clubs across the globe with impressive regularity. A man with a varied production portfolio to his name, stretching back to 2006's debut for Restart Records, almost a century of credits grace the ever-popular microCastle imprint alongside a host of remix and original works for the likes of Perspectives Digital, Balkan Connection and his own highly-regarded Replug.
A regular for Proton Music since "Shake Before Use" in 2009 and "Defrost" the following year, remixes of DNYO, Andre Sobota and Deepfunk have continued to extend the Proton mastering engineer's influence further still. Now returning to Proton Music for a suitably high-profile rework, Cid Inc's outstanding interpretation of Oliver Lieb's work takes "WASP-17b" on a typically rhythm-fuelled journey allied to a trademark bass groove that bounces effortlessly throughout. A subtle re-envisioning of Lieb's melodic phrasing has resulted in imaginative additional production that is certain to leave dance floors writhing in ecstasy.
San Francisco based Mark Slee is a man of multiple talents. A renowned DJ in the bay area and part of the Listed Bookings talent roster, Slee's performances across his hometown and beyond have seen his deep house sensibilities pack clubs from Playa del Carmen in Cape Town to Robot Heart in New York City.
Combining complex cadences with "whimsical bounce", the Mark Slee production portfolio has seen a clutch of releases for Jondi and Spesh's Looq both in original form, including the "Sunday Trails" EP, and through remixes of Marshal Watson and Miss Disk. Now returning to Proton Music after a successful debut reworking Scotty.A's "Next Chapter", the Mark Slee remix of "WASP-17b" is an impressive study in production technique and flair. Using a laid back hypnotic rhythmic structure, a delightfully delayed arpeggio riff references Lieb's original, cascading in dizzying glory atop subtle chord progressions, whispering vocal effects and clever bass groove. The resulting work is a unique and intelligent reworking of thr techno original into a smooth deep house masterpiece.
Exhibiting trademark flair, two new remixes from the Oliver Lieb universe has ensured "WASP-17b" is still light years ahead.
