This was the second vinyl release for Danny Ward's (dubble d/moodymanc) Well Cut Records features an ep from "Balaphonic". A project which fuses organic live instrumentation and musicianship with deep and modal dancefloor sensibilities.
"Adventures in Lagos" is a long evolving and deep building hypnotic afro groove featuring spoken word samples of Fela Kuti and street sounds taken from 1970s Lagos.
"Three Strikes and Out" is a lush sounding deep, 119 bpm organic groove which builds into a percussion workout and has been championed of late to great effect in the sets of Osunlade, Jimpster and Detroit Swindle.
Opening side 2, "Disorganics" is a nod toward the great Brazillian recordings of the 1960s and seventies yet keeps the tempo firmly locked for the dancefloor. Live samba percussion opens into themes built on 10 string guitar parts and a driving double bass line which build to a melodic drop based on a theme played on plucked cello! Definitely one for the heads!.
Closing the e.p. is "Silver Lining", in tribute to the late great jazz musician and musical visionary Horace Silver. Dark, ride driven, earthy house drums propel a modal grand piano and double bass riff to build the tension which evolves with an ever expanding analogue synth line, keeping energy high whilst percussion and string parts develop to augment the dynamics!
