
Following the otherworldly 'Glagol' album (released by Hobbes Music in Autumn '23), Russian artist Galun returns to the label with a new long player, Weightlessness, and it's another spaced out opus beamed in from another dimension.
Galun is the solo project of Moscow musician, artist, and producer Sergei Galunenko (currently based in Tallinn). Galunenko has performed at numerous prestigious Russian events and collaborated on projects internationally in a career spanning more than 15 years, with a discography to match, turning his attention to myriad styles: IDM, funk, techno, juke, post rock, beatboxing, free improvisation, drone.
“In my project, Galun, I do not use musical instruments,” he explains. “All the sounds are produced with only the use of my voice through beatbox and special vocal skills. Some effects are used to produce electronic sounds.”
"The idea of this album was to make a kind of continuation of this project but the task was to exclude any voice processing, using only three effects, such as a compressor, equalizer (filter) and reverb.
However, in writing this album, I still had to move away a little from the concept: low notes, to get a deep bass, had to be lowered an octave down (pitch shifter). Various techniques, in the form of an arpeggiator, were already done with the help of editing, cutting short pieces of voice.
By genre, I wanted to make a monolithic album, in the spirit of new age and ambient, where the tracks would also be a kind of continuation of the previous one. The music turned out to be airy, uncomplicated, in a sense weightless. Artificial intelligence was also used in the assistants. It was interesting to test it for different harmonies."
