"Freak Mode" is the sort of track that sneaks up on you, even though it's not exactly subtle. Bergwall and Holmapojken lean right into the glossy swing of French House, pulling out those looping filters and chopped-up samples that make the floor feel like it's shifting beneath you. The kick is steady, sharp, but there's something playful stitched between the grooves, almost like it's daring you to let go a little more than you planned.
The title isn't misleading. There's a weird streak here, in the best way - little stabs of sound that wobble off-kilter, flashes of disco shimmer that vanish before you're sure they were there. It doesn't settle into one mood for long. Maybe that's why it works so well. You're kept on edge, waiting for the next twist, while still wrapped up in a rhythm that feels almost hypnotic.
I tried listening through headphones first, and it was fine, but when it came through proper speakers the bassline grew teeth. It clamped down and refused to let go. DJs will know what to do with it, obviously, but it doesn't feel locked away in that world - it could just as easily catch someone on a casual night at home, volume creeping higher than intended.
