Selville is proud to introduce the left-field, scuffed electronic sounds of Kurtx (pronounced Cats) on his debut album ‘The Sampling Format’ out July 15th, 2022. Across 9 songs the Soweto-based producer lays down a dirty-sample-heavy style that should chime with fans of Zito Mowa, Max Graef, and J Dilla alike. “This album was influenced by the music that I used to hear when I was still in primary school,” says Kurtx.

Kurtx has been experimenting and flipping beats for a while now, which you can hear sneaking under most tracks on The Sampling Format. Kurtx did reach out to close collaborators Jehan, BNinjas, and Manuael Costela to contribute to this masterpiece. “My uncles mostly played all types of music from ballads, soul, funk, disco, to house and hip-hop, ” Kurtx explains, which explains why the blend of so many sounds comes through his production

“What I really loved was when they would play house music from records so the style of sound really got stuck in my head and which made me want to venture into music composition and that’s why a add vinyl textures in my work,” says Kurtx

Kurtx credits his fellow South African producers such as Zito Mowa, King Mutapa, and BNinjas for giving him the confidence to venture into the MPC-sample-heavy sound as he was skeptical of creating such sound at the beginning of his musical journey

This Album already feels like it’s pressed on plastic. Play this on a chill-out, play this on Sunday, play this on a Monday on your way to work. Enjoy it.
