Night Lights

Jonny Faith

Heard And Felt
HF019 | 2019-11-22
Jonny Faith's journey in music has taken him from Edinburgh, through London and Sydney, to his adopted hometown of Melbourne. Along the way he has toured Japan with Bonobo, performed alongside Flying Lotus and Dam-Funk, been remixed by Clap! Clap! and dropped LPs on labels shared by Quantic and Debruit (Kokoko).
With the Night Lights EP, Jonny's signature production sound of crisp drums, deep bass tones and cosmic melodies is firmly in place across all tracks. This is music for the heads, an updated take on the Mo'Wax aesthetic where fluid shapes form from slabs of hip hop, jazz, drum & bass, footwork and more.
Seeing as Jonny is best known for his instrumental music - which still accounts for most of the EP - listeners may be a little surprised at the appearance of two vocal tracks here. But Jonny's rich and spacey beatscapes sit perfectly in vocal settings, as in previous collabs with Harleighblu and remixes for The Bamboos and Hot 8 Brass Band.
Here Mohamed Camara, heard previously with 30/70's Jarrod Chase, adds a touch of Guinea to the chiming uptempo 'Fana'. Meanwhile the gentle jazzy flow of US MC Lady K - part rapped, part sung - rides the boom bap of 'Stay in Your Lane'.
