Sonja – Ever Return

Sonja is a singer-songwriter and pianist from Cape Town, South Africa, who has loved singing since childhood. Having grown up making music in the local church and with her family, Sonja believes her talent is God given. She thus aims to nurture it throughout her lifetime for God's glory and for the enjoyment of all. Trained classically on piano, Sonja completed Grade 7 practicals through University of South Africa (UNISA) while taking music as a subject at high school. While her first attempts at song writing involved putting melodies to poetry, Sonja has since been inspired by various Christian contemporary musicians and now works concurrently on melodies and lyrics that revolve around specific themes and ideas.


In recent years, Sonja's soft yet rich contralto has been featured on various EPs released by South African music producer, Nini Maluks, with songs such as "Won't Forget You”; "Come Starlight" and “For Souls to Soar". Prior to that, Sonja also featured on her sister Tertia's second album called Origin: Wild Olive with her song "Firstborn”. In 2017, Sonja recorded "Bittersweet Moments" for Sir LSG’s debut album entitled Moving Circles.

Ever Return EP was produced by Nini Maluks and is the eighth release under Laminar-Wavy Records. Released in November 2018, this EP has been highly anticipated and long overdue. With a fusion of soulful house, funk, broken beat and deep house, it includes six (6) tracks and highlights Sonja's sweet harmonies as well as unforgettable basslines, synths, piano, rhodes as well as rhythmic beats that are undeniably catchy. Of note are the warm, jazzy tones of Nigerian saxophonist Femi Koya on “Could Only Be You”. “Carefree” features Simz (real name Simphiwe Kulla) from South African eclectic soul trip band, The Muffinz, adding flavour on lead electric guitar. Also complementing Sonja's vocals on ‘Carefree’, are soulful additions arranged and sung by Congolese born vocalist Pascale Yav.
