The tough tribal world on Carlo Lio’s new ‘Colors EP’ for SCI+TEC Digital Audio instantly intoxicates. The beats, bass, and giddy groove are relentless, unstoppable, like an army marching to a thousand drums.

The same could be said of the Toronto-based producer and DJ. This is Lio’s third release on SCI+TEC since July 2009, when he rolled onto techno’s main stage with the dark and absorbing debut, ‘Sour Diesel / Purple Soul’. Then followed ‘Let’s Get Back’ in June this year which confirmed his status as one of techno’s brightest new talents: it was superbly warped and devastatingly efficient.

‘Colors EP’ picks up the pace and intensity further with its three sides forming an edifying nexus of tribal patterns and techno loops. It’s a sound that some might attribute to the heyday of Carl Cox (who incidentally, is also a supporter of Lio).

Pitched down drum rolls, military snares, radioactive bass pulses, and filtered vocal hits combine with fractions of a driving hi hat on ‘Black’, the EP’s most sinister cut. Its solid structure and throbbing techno sound puts it comfortably into the peak time box.

‘White’ is more jumbled, with bumbling kick drums forcing a filtered machine loop into overdrive, before detonating into an impressive drop. It’s hedonistic, late night techno, the kind of groove SCI+TEC label boss Dubfire plays with come 5AM.

The EP’s final pleasure, ‘Red’, sees Carlo Lio’s passion for tribal drums finally boil over, reaching critical dancefloor mass via a few highly tuned rhythmical elements. Snippets of a female vocal build in force, as Lio’s layered, rampaging drums run amok, beautifully contrasted with his trademark smart bass movement.
