For the rich and powerful ones, the recovery process ushered in a new era of political extremism, fear of immigration, Islamophobia, police and military brutalities and many other plagues yet to be understood. For the poorest countries, it meant a systematic loss of identity, wealth, and hope. These indebted states are the ghosts of Europe. Long live the dead.
