It's been nearly two years since the last Sanys record. In the meantime, techno has flirted with noise and industrial, often resulting in gloomy self-indulgence.

Thankfully, there is no such creative verbiage on this seventh instalment of Downfall Theory. "Seizure" starts the release with a robust, stepping rhythm and relentless stabs playing out against atmospheric, eerie textures. It's like Shed's Wax project jamming with Deepchord.

Next up is "Natural High". This is one of Sanys' darkest moments so far; inspired by the depth and length of the St Petersburg winter, it sees the Russian producer lay down a visceral, muddy rhythm, against which ghostly shrieks and waves of frosty chords, blown in from the Baltic Sea, meet.

"Free Society" follows and at this stage the release takes a left of centre turn. It centres on a dense groove, defined by beats that collapse in on top of one another, space invader bleeps and some of the spookiest synths this side of John Carpenter. It's only for the bravest selectors, but once dropped it'll cause havoc.

The Clouds remix of "Seizure" closes out the release; the Scottish pair take a break from releasing on labels like Turbo, Soma, Opal Tapes and Electric Deluxe to deliver a noisy broken beat version.

Focusing on noisy, malfunctioning computer tones and bolstered by killer subs, it's a far cry from Sanys' original version but is sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in the interface between techno, bass and knackered machines.

This latest Downfall Theory record shows that seven truly is the magic number.
