A new year begins and a new seasonal compilation blazes incandescent through dark days and long cold nights. "Winter Particles 2016" continues the quarterly compilation series with a sextet of tracks that warm the bones and tingle the spine. Six established artists come together across the continents in musical harmony.
Opening proceedings, the soft, sustained chords of "Prognose" wash delicately underneath a collage of reverb-laden textures and percussive cadence. Belgian producer BP setting the bar high with a beautifully constructed track that bounces along through grooved arpeggio riff and emotive air. Having worked with production partner Gullen on the "Nostaw/Marzo" EP for Proton Music, Norwegian artist, anders., demands immediate attention through "Paris, Mon Amie". The epitome of modern melodic techno, Stephan Bodzin and Marc Romboy are immediately brought to mind through heartfelt analogue melodies that filter in dizzying LFO glory. Dominant beat and and ticking percussion hold anchor as melodic counterpoint soars to rousing crescendo.
Particles regular, GMJ, provides a deep evocative atmosphere via his "Country of the Soul". Evolving gently over its eight-minute timeframe, pulsating pads and freeform melodic riffs supply a rich tapestry under which a throbbing bass line makes its presence felt and intermittent vocal cuts supply intrigue. UK industry stalwart, Ad Brown makes a typically impressive statement through "Can We". Trademark bass line flair is in full evidence as a house vocal filters into view in perfect synchronicity with Brown's epic groove. Effortless rises and drops illustrate an artist fully in touch with the modern club scene in a work that is highly impressive.
A growing force in the modern production scene, Belarusian producer, Michael A, has regularly hit the headlines throughout 2015 with a raft of high-profile releases. Finding his way back to Particles, "Fine Day" features a high-octane groove that moves mercilessly forwards through heavy beat and shuffling sixteenth hi-hats. Dual bass lines provide a synchronous match as they gallop across the audio landscape while pitched vocal samples and clever melodic interplay build urgency throughout, accompanied by a raft of gated pads. Final track, "Gargantua" sees Russian industry leader, Abdomen Burst, hit his impressive stride once again. A passionate breaks advocate, staccato rhythm and groove provide a perfect backdrop for a sumptuous collection of melodic riffs and lead lines elevating the higher frequencies. A range of melodic textures in place, the stuttered, ‘question and answer' approach is a wonderful BT-esque work that thrills and surprises.
Six tracks from some of the industry's finest producers, sees seasonal chill burning white hot through "Winter Particles 2016".
