A legendary figure in the world of underground dance music, Mortinaré has created a full-length 10-track album of magnificent proportions in "Amped". Under his Lank moniker, Péter Golyán was a staple of the progressive house fraternity from the mid-2000s onwards, with appearances on microCastle, Quivver's Boz Boz and Hybrid's "Soundsystem_01" album on Hope Records. By contrast, his Mortinaré pseudonym allowed him to delve into electronica and downtempo with a clutch of Particles releases in 2012 that saw a remix of Exoplanet and a debut 10-track album in the shape of "Welcome to the Wormhole".
Now continuing his Mortinaré story "Amped" is a remarkable journey through immaculately constructed electronica. From the smooth pads, chugging bass energy and glitched vocal effects of the title track, these tropes run through the early stages with the subtle breakbeat foundations of "Airmax" adding delicate groove with the loquacious spoken word of "Mirror Saga" providing an ominous tone alongside its "Prologue" corollary. Vivid sonic soundscapes can be found via the beautiful, gated melodies of "Theme for Trisa" which sit elegantly alongside the thickly textured pads and rich harmonics of "Plateau" and the dark vibrancy of "Turboya". The more traditional club-friendly backdrop of "Loggia" is powered by rasping, overdriven synth lines, while rhythmic intensity is maintained through "Somewhere" in both its lighter "Amped Version" and edgy "Unconditional Version". The result is a 10-track journey through the mind of a music visionary and production genius.
A pair of remixes appear on the release with Gai Barone and Luke Brancaccio reprising their recent remix of dernis, the kid on Proton Music in June 2024 and Verche's "Riptide" a year earlier. Now reworking "Somewhere", a huge beat and ticking percussive groove lay the foundation for a squelching bassline sequence to propel forwards. Familiar chord progressions and musical arrangements are prominent characters in a cast of vivid soundscapes from Mortinaré's original, while a wealth of new production material takes the track in an outstanding dancefloor direction that is certain to feature on the playlists of the DJ glitterati.
Fresh from his cross-genre album, "Home" at the end of 2023 with its progressive and organic house character, Davide Ferrario has seen previous success on Particles with his "End of an Era" EP and remixes for Rudy and LADS in 2020-21. Returning to remix "Last Funk", the chugging, gravelly metronomic intensity of the original is transformed into a lighter 4/4 interpretation with elegant piano phrasing and free-flowing synth motifs creating new melodies that stem from the themes inherent in Mortinaré's original. Full of dancefloor dynamism and a raft of original production work, the track is testament to Davide's craft and vision.
After a decade-long hiatus, Mortinaré is a very welcome returning artist with a potent collection of sculpted musical masterpieces in "Amped".
