Pastor Torrey L. Barrett, I Founder and Executive Director K.L.E.O. Community Family Life Center Chicago, IL 60637 Pastor Torrey L. Barrett was born in Chicago, Illinois, the middle child of seven children. Torrey’s passion for working with youth began after graduating from LSU. Torrey worked for different social service organizations providing service to DCFS participants. Torrey had a gift for inspiring the most difficult clients and earned the reputation of “The One” that can handle the rough kids. In 2004, Torrey’s reputation for providing quality service and his efforts for bringing about peace received international recognition. Torrey was appointed US Chapter President of Youth Federation for World Peace International. In that capacity, Torrey facilitated brining large groups of youth from America to foreign countries to engage the youth of those countries in peaceful negotiations. Torrey’s work in the Middle East earned him an Ambassador for Peace title by the State of Israel. As US Chapter president for YFWP, Torrey has partnered with Martin Luther King, III. and Realizing the Dream organization to work with citizens of Nairobi Kenya after the post election violence that took place. Torrey led a delegation of 150 youth to Kenya to work with elected officials and citizens of Kenya to find a peaceful resolution for the violence. Torrey encouraged the Kenyan’s to engage in service activities together which will force dialogue and possible reconciliation. As a result, the Kenyan’s adapted a portion of the Nairobi River and worked in groups of 30 to clean the site that had been used as a dumping ground for the past 40 years. Torrey’s efforts concluded with a speech to the United Nations encouraging the citizens of Kenya to Live for the Sake of others by engaging in service activities together. In March of 2007 tragedy struck the Barrett family and Torrey’s younger sister Kleo Barrett was killed due to a domestic violence incident. The incident affected the lives of many people in the Chicago community and called for action to be put into place in order to stop future incidents. Torrey and his family immediately went into action and created two none-for-profit entities that address the need of irradiating domestic violence and building character and self esteem to address the needs of the troubled youth of his community. Torrey believes that the youth are our future. He believes that the youth of America are the ones that have been chosen by God, to lead his people to the destination that he has for them. In December of 2007, Torrey organized and opened a youth center name K.L.E.O. Community Family Life Center (www.thekleocenter.org). The goal of the center is to bring about change in the lives of its participants by fostering an atmosphere of unity by teaching them to Keep Loving Each Other. Torrey has received recognition from a great number of individuals and organizations that include Mayor Rham Emanuel; Nairobi Kenya Prime Minister Award (2006); Whose Who Chicago 40 under 40 Award in 2012; Chicago Defender Men of Excellence Award in 2012; Cook County State’s Attorney C.F.
