Motivated to introduce a new and different sound in both the music he produces and performs in front of others, Santiago Lopez has always been inspired by a range of influences from his multicultural San Francisco home.
A quartet of tracks including the "Minna" EP on Progrezo Records represents a flavour of the Santiago Lopez sound. Searching for a "musical balance" between regular DJ appearances in his hometown and a production foothold, experience playing alongside the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Nic Fanciulli and Hernan Cattaneo has afforded Lopez the opportunity to analyse the musical sensibilities of some of the underground dance movement's finest exponents. Now with a return to the production arena, Apollo is pleased to announce Santiago Lopez's three-track "Red Sunset" EP.
Contemplative in nature, the triptych of tracks comprising "Red Sunset" are deep house gems that sparkle in their glowing surroundings. The title track itself opens proceedings with a shuffling hi-hat rhythm against straight house beat and eerie percussive accents. A series of melodic motifs play meander delicately across the landscape as images of sun-soaked tribal planes are conjured in the mind's eye.
"The Call" continues the journey as high tempo percussive shakers bring a sense of head-shaking groove against a metronomic kick drum. Melancholy undertones pervade the collage of rhythmic melodic motifs and repetitive chord hits. Shortwave-radio vocal cuts complete the picture as echoes of David Sylvian and German avant-garde artist, Holger Czukay, add further resonance.
Final track "Bright Trails", provides a delightful deep house moment with reverb-soaked, delayed clave groove and rhythmic chord progressions. The vibrancy of the melodic components are immediately apparent as motifs drift their way effortlessly while muted stabs rise in filtered crescendo before dropping once more into a warm and rich house groove.
With three brand new offerings from Santiago Lopez the dawn looks bright after a brilliant "Red Sunset".
