Glenn Fallows and Steve 'KIW' Ellis come home to Higher Love Recordings as Andres Y Xavi with a new 4-track EP. On what is the pair's probably most dance-floor-directed release to date, each of the tunes takes its name from cross continental cities and towns.
New York is tight, taut mid-tempo proto-house, driven by some lovely, rubbery, post-punk funk bass. The groove's vibe very late 1970s, Lower East Side, with cowbell and congas accompanying a proper, rolling piano vamp. The result like beefed-up disco-not-disco. Zilkah and Esteban's Ze Records on a cocktail of APEDs.
All the cuts act as showcases for some quality keys. The chugging Chicago, more electronic than this musical journey's previous stop, surrounds its solos with squeaking circuitry, robotic banging and bleeps.
Lagos, in contrast, is 'organic' and orchestral. An African chant giving the track its title. The arrangement sporting a funky B-line and snares, but the mood that of a romantic reprise. Something that would make for suitable morning music at haunts such as infamous NYC nightclub, The Saint.
The closing, Eno / Eventide-esque string-soaked Sant Antoni is a near 11-minute epic. Born of bleeps again, but this time bearing an introspective melody, this Spanish destination nods its head and shuffles its feet to a pitched-up Soul II Soul break and a growling bass lick. Making dancers wait til the mid-way point before the contemplative piano hits, there's an ambient interlude, and then a back-spin brings everything, rocking, back in.
