Born, raised and based in Estonia, Saimon has spent the last decade showcasing his love of reggae culture, primarily via the purist Strictly Dub Records imprint but also its more open-minded and lightly experimental younger sibling, Seafront International. It was his exploits on the latter, including spells producing and collaborating with artists as Simon Chaozlevel, that inspired his latest project: the sun-soaked, White Isle friendly Balearic dub grooves of Roots Artefact.
He's chosen to debut that project on NuNorthern Soul, offering up a gorgeous, tactile, musically detailed and frequently sun-splashed four-tracker packed to the rafters with slow-motion dub rhythms, languid instrumentation and twinkling, stretched-out instrumental solos.
The Estonian artist unveils the Roots Artefact blueprint on opener The Big Calm Dubwise, where field recordings of lapping waves, fluctuating ambient chords and delay-laden electric guitar motifs usher in deep, dubby sub-bass, head-nodding drum hits and effects-laden musical flourishes. As becalmed, hazy and saucer-eyed as the title suggests, its a stunning chunk of extra-immersive downtempo dub.
Saimon ups the tempo a little on the jaunty joy of Riding With Ease, where playful and ear-catching synth melodies, relaxed piano solos and the dreamiest of chords wrap themselves around a tougher but more shuffling digital dub groove. He pushes things even further on In Circles, a more dancefloor-ready chunk of summery Balearic dub awash with attractive piano melodies, stretched-out horn solos, echoing reggae riffs and sunrise-ready refrains.
To round of an inspired debut outing, Saimon slaps down title track Different Perspective. Featuring a more thickset beat, a bolder bassline, and even more expansive instrumentation, the track offers an addictive and infectious conclusion rich in fluttering flutes, echoing saxophone, deep space electronics and the most gorgeous of sunset-ready melodies. Like the rest of the EP, its an assured, entertaining and genuinely mood-enhancing statement of intent.
