Meaning behind 'Careless'

It really is a song fundamentally about regret, but mainly about pentinence and all the forms it takes - especially self reproach in the wake of being careless with the heart of another.
It's also about forgiveness, granting second chances and seeking grace from somebody you've hurt (or has hurt you) and placing yourself in a position of humility in order to seek their absolution.
Everybody makes mistakes, but everybody has the power to change and forgiveness itself can bring aboutthatchange.
