Maudlin

Particles
PSI2219 | 2023-02-24
A new artist moniker to grace the Particles catalogue, Dmitry Molosh hits the ground running with his Maudlin alter-ego and the twin-track, "Trailway" EP. Already seeing a pair of remixes for Anton Ishutin and The Cobb feature on Pepper Cat and -102C, Maudlin delivers a silky-smooth title track. "Trailway" blissfully wends a magical path with a swathe of interwoven melodies through keys, arpeggios and thickly textured pads. A strong kick and ticking percussion provide dancefloor character while a loquacious vocal line trips along elegantly, perfectly placed within rhythmic and melodic elements. "Awake" continues a similar rhythmic framework with rolling cadence paving the way for sumptuous arpeggios and filtered motifs to blossom. Glorious counterpoint strings add a melancholy air while meandering brass and haunting lead line create a wistful character that rises and falls with ease over the 7-minute duration.

A Particles regular with a slew of original material which has seen "Twin Flames", "Floating Moments" and "Light the Shades" showcase the Polish artist's work between 2018-2022, Rafa'EL now returns to Particles with a typically impressive remix. A groove-laden affair, Rafa'EL takes the melodic foundations of "Trailway" and applies a panoply of production treatments and the introduction of a powerful new bassline sequence. Familiar vocal lines make their presence felt as they are cut and laden with effects before a new lead drives Rafa'EL's remix in a dramatic new direction.

A Colombian star who has become a staple on Proton Music with his collaborative work alongside Kamilo Sanclemente and his own "Equilibrium" EP in May 2022, Dabeat is a welcome Particles returnee after an appearance on the seasonal "Winter 2019" compilation with "Beyond the Stars". Reworking "Awake", the Dabeat remix is a richly textured affair with a Latin groove and immaculately syncopated synth phrasing. Making effortless use of the core melodies found in Maudlin's original, they are transformed with ease into a flowing and perfectly observed progressive house gem.

Michael Chihaka has become a Particles favourite with his score of production credits that include the "Nyara", "Pinda" and "Ndariska" EPs between 2019 and 2021. Now returning for a fifth remix after reworkings of Pole Folder, Ric Niels and most recently, about : river in mid-2021, the Chihaka remix of "Trailway" makes imaginative use of the vocal lines so integral to Maudlin's track. Cut, repeated and filtered, their use sits perfectly within a rapid-fire percussive top line and delicate melodic bed that captures the essence of the original while extending it in new and vibrant directions that blossom post-breakdown.

A pair of original tracks combined with a trio of wonderful remixes find Maudlin on a magical voyage of discovery via "Trailway".
