There are so many remarkable facets to this CD that it is difficult to know where to begin telling you about them. I could start by saying the production quality on this CD is immediately apparent and would do a multi-million Dollar international release proud. I could follow that up with a comment or two about the genuine quality of the artists and the obvious passion, experience and talent they bring to the table. I might even try the gushing groupie thing and declare that this album is "awesome" and "you just gotta go get it for yourself". But, instead of expecting you to believe little old me I decided to catch up with the DeltaWaves crew and let them tell you about it themselves.

"This is straight from the heart, there is no compromise on this album", declares Petro the label owner and artist better known as Static Plastic from his many years at the forefront of SA’s dance scene. Paul Thackwray (Paul T) nods his head in agreement and adds that the album is more a lifestyle thing rather than something that can be pigeonholed into a genre. And, even though this 13-track offering is firmly rooted in the rhythms and beats of house music (varying from vocal to funky to deep to tech) I know exactly what he means. Whether you are fighting your way through morning rush hour traffic, chilling out on a lazy Sunday afternoon or trashed off your face at some obscene hour of the morning and up for a jam session, this album seems to just slot straight into your mood. In fact, my copy of the DeltaWaves - PhazeOne CD is already looking a bit battered as it has spent the last couple of weeks making the daily journey from my stereo to my car and back into my stereo again because I'm finding it difficult to listen to anything else. Maybe it has something to do with the absolutely zero-cheese, groovy feel of the whole thing, a welcome relief from the deliberately radio friendly formulae that seems to infect most locally produced house.

The CD, as has already been mentioned, is difficult to categorize properly. Probably because it showcases the talents of several of the artists from the Static Plastic label and even though there is a commonality of purpose, each artist brings his or her unique feel for the music to bear. There are the deep, progressive vibes of Static Plastic and Troye, the jazz of Nomarena and the harder, almost techie tracks of Paul T. On top of that you've got the angelic vocals of budding diva Philadelphia whose treatment of the superb lyrics of "Not that easy" is, for a vocal house junkie like me, just sublime. I will be very surprised if that track, along with a couple of the others, does not get a fair amount of radio and dance floor play in the coming months. When I asked the crew whether they have any particular favorites, the genuine depth of mutual admiration that exists between them surprised me. This is extremely rare in my experience as most artists will give a cursory compliment or two about another's stuff before launching into detailed, self-centered descriptions of their own efforts. From the garbled recordings of my Dictaphone (we were chilling out at the crew's home-away-from-home, Moe's, in Norwood) and my own memory the DeltaWaves guys, to man (and girl!) all expressed the view that the others tracks were the best for various, very valid reasons. Not one of them piled into a diatribe about their own efforts. And, I think this is part of the album's appeal. That warmth, mutual respect and understanding can be heard in the music...Steve Blues 2002
