It was June in 1971, and the streets of NE Washington, DC were alive with the anticipation of summer freedom. Eight
students at McKinley Tech High School were daydreaming of national fame; butit was a desired recognition borne not of
sports talents, or top of the class academics, or impromptu a cappella performances still common on DC's street corners.
No, their dreams stemmed from the results of countless hours of band practice. Individual musical talents combined into
one highly energetic mass of instrumentation and vocals that demanded community support, a kind of multi-layered soul
music reminiscent of pocket locked JB%u2019s with an over-zealous Booker T. Kids had been calling the group "The Sound
Affect Band", but as the summer cooled and prepared to father a new school year, the band members desired a change.
The boys began referring to their aggregate collective as "Mugo Kenyatta", meaning "wise musicians" in Swahelli.
And now in 2011 Kay-Dee Records has put together these recording's which is a almost a unreleased album of material
with featuring mixes from "Kenny Dope" at his Kay-Dee Studio.
