Oliver Chlass has certainly left a mark on the Berlin Tech-House scene. Unlike so many other DJs who are frequently rocking those famous Berlin clubs, his style tends to be dark, uncompromising and even freakish at times. Take his original mix of the upcoming Magic Bleeps EP on Lebensfreude. While the opening LFOed synth sequence feels like a soul shredding experience, the bassline arising from the ashes feels surprisingly calm and settles for an inexorable stoic groove that only is interrupted shortly by a sad, pitched synth line that underscores the tracks melancholiac yet energetic tone.
A rather cathartic experience that is ramped up even further by the Negativ Dekadent remix that opens with very dark atmospheric loops. Although the bassline is inspired by the original it even worms itself deeper into ones soul with its sub bassy gloom. Not to speak of the metallic, distorted leads that place the track among sombre Techno finest. A composed exercise in crazy dancefloor darkness.
Finally Chris von B's reworks starts on a more conventional Techno note at first, just to end up in the same sublime hopelessness later. When a dubby chord sequence opens up out of nothing, the track keeps the same vibe but manages to bring a hypnotic frenzy to the dancefloor.
All in all, a sombre package for the after or darker hours of your night (and day) out in the clubs.
