Joining Jamie Anderson’s Arthouse label venture for his first full solo release, long-time Dessous Recordings partner in crime Owain K drops three fresh cuts of deeply burnt house that should appeal as much to heads as it will to hedonists.
Firing on all cylinders, the Cardiff (UK) based producer demonstrates why his music has already caught the ears of those in the know. Following up his remix of Art Bleek’s “Treep” on Arthouse 011, Impressions EP is a three piece suite of some of Owain’s most refined work to-date, and is a welcome addition to the label roster.
Opening with the ear-pleasing warmth of “New Horizon”, hypnotic melody, whispery echoes and twinkling bass loop to perfection: capturing one of those moments that evokes summer sunshine and a crisp sea-breeze. If you’ve ever spent a moment exploring the coastline of West Wales, we’ll let you guess exactly which location conjured up the inspiration for this lovingly crafted piece of music. “Night Echoes” gets deeper into the groove, taking cues from sweaty dance floors and late-night fuelled fun. Aimed squarely at driving on through to the early hours, the track is steeped with nocturnal inferences. Centring on a heavily-laid Detroit stab and acid-pogo type bass, when the airily stacked harmonies drop after the break, the mood rises to another level: providing an extra moment’s smile in the mix.
Last but not least, the pressing swing of a 909 drum track on “Spheres” funnels aquatic aesthetics to the pump of a Yamaha DX-100. Enveloped by soothing chords, the combination of these timbres injects a fresh funk to these classic elements – giving them an all-rounded space that is all too often missing.
