Intimate Stranger

Munk

Under The Shade
UTS042 | 2014-02-17
Gomma boss and musical impresario Munk is back with a new single on Under The Shade that gets remix treatment from Fabrizio Mammarella, Mercury and Plastic Plates. The German producer is well known as a fine production talent who has teamed up with the likes of James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem fame) and Pachanga Boys in the recent past, and his sounds are never less than electrifying.

The EP kicks off with an extended mix of ‘Intimate Stranger’. Based around a classic sounding, fat bottomed bassline, plenty of squelchy house percussion fleshes out the groove, but it’s not ‘til the pitched up female vocal drops that the tune really takes off. It lends a soulful and uplifting edge to the warm, melodically colourful track that simply makes you feel good.

As well as an instrumental edit, there are some fine remixes included. The first is from Italian talent Fabrizio Mammarella, who is also one third of Clap Rules and has been releasing great music on labels like Slow Motion and Bear Funk for a decade. His version is laced with acid lines, has more driven drums underpinning it and is generally that bit darker and moodier.
Mercury goes next and transforms the track into a nicely bouncing, long form bit of prog-flavoured house with heavily treated vocals and various rasping analogue lines. Finally, New York’s Plastic Plates, who has worked with Kitsune in the past, reworks the track as a slow, hip swinging and deep bit of disco funk with chopped vocal samples, dazzling chords and plenty of organic warmth.

Munk is an expert at crafting dancefloor dynamite and this is no different, especially when backed with such varied and vicious remixes from a range of top talents.
