Fresh Meat Records welcomes longtime Chicago producer, DJ, and Smooth Agent label head, Sean Smith with his debut single for the label, Come Into Focus. Smith has been a fixture of Chicago's house scene since the 90s, and this latest cut shows both his history and his forward-looking instincts. Clocking in at 118 BPM, the track is deep yet full of energy, a layered instrumental that thrives on detail and movement.
Angular 909 snare rolls cut through the groove while wildly swinging hi-hats and percussion provide the rhythmic push. Anchored by a rubber band bass line that nods to Chicago's canon but carries hints of Detroit's afterhours lo-fi house spirit, the track strikes a balance between drive and restraint. Keys and chords appear sparingly, washing in and out with intention, while a siren-like synth lead only arrives late in the arrangement adding a final surge of tension. Come Into Focus is not a straightforward stock track; it's designed for selectors who want to manipulate, stretch, and guide a dancefloor.
Two remixes expand the vision. Gabriel Palomo, who appeared previously on FMR as one half of Da Outlawz, takes all the original elements, including the spoken refrain "the world behind the world," and reworks them with his own crunch-heavy blend of 808 and 909 drums. The syncopated layers could easily underpin a 140 BPM techno stormer, but by keeping the tempo locked to the original's 118 BPM, Palomo invents something unique, a house track with the bite and intensity of techno.
Devastating Dennis provides the second remix, digging deep into his own hypnotic, percussion-driven sound. His take stretches the arrangement into a subliminal workout where the musical elements ebb and flow almost beneath consciousness. With its disco-like cadence and Dennis's trademark groove, his remix becomes another tool for DJs seeking long, propulsive blends and powerful dancefloor moments.
Music written, arranged, and produced by Sean Smith.
Track 2 remix, additional production by Gabriel Palomo.
Track 3 remix and additional production by Devastating Dennis.
