Anima and animus (from Latin anima and Latin animus 'life principle; soul' in the feminine and masculine genders, respectively) are terms introduced into psychology by Jung to denote archetypes associated with the female and male genders, respectively[1]. Jung believed that the Anima is the feminine part of a man's psyche, and the Animus is the masculine part of a woman's psyche; in essence, both are archetypes of gender and are largely unconscious archetypes.
