Retromigration

International Chrome
DATA PLANET 7 | 2025-05-27
Change is coming on 27th May: International Chrome, the label run by Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code, will release the debut long-player by German-Nigerian artist Retromigration, through its Data Planet cassette series. The album is a multi-genre trip through the artist’s memories of the music of his life, featuring collaborations with afro-techno wiz Yazzus, Irish electro producer Ngoni Egan, and Zimbawean DJ Passion Deez.

From our first listen, the album really struck a chord with us, as Retromigration (real name Malik) took us into a new sonic sphere. He’s become known for his strong hold on all things house these last few years, but here he’s raised the tempo and finessed new rhythms like a seasoned vet, delivering this fast-paced groove extravaganza; a masterclass of afro-futurism.

With Change, we see Malik traverse multiple genres whilst simultaneously giving a beautiful insight into his Nigerian and Ghanaian roots. This execution of funk, soul & fast-paced groove is really made evident on tracks like 'Rum & Lime', 'Ebi', 'Black Excellence' & the titled track itself, 'Change'.

“The idea around the release is to show a different side of my music…influences of footwork, jungle, African/Caribbean rhythms and samples all still evolving around jazz, soul and hip hop influences.I also wanted to emphasise and celebrate Black artists in the electronic music sphere and therefore have collaborations with close friend Ngoni Egan and Passion Deez as well as a super special remix by my cousin Yazzus, so it’s a real friends and family affair.”

These themes of celebration, amalgamation and nostalgia are further reflected in the cut ‘n’ paste style album artwork featuring photos from the artist’s childhood. The limited edition tape comes in a transparent teal cassette.
