D.Ramirez & Cevin Fisher
Restless
Great Stuff Recordings
At first sight, a collaboration between UK house stalwart D.Ramirez and US hero Cevin Fisher might seem a little unusual on paper. Yorkshire meets New Jersey? But think about it a little more and you’ll see that they both emerged during the mid-’90s, with a shared love of tribal sounds in their work as they moved into the new millenium. And once you’ve listened to their hot new collaboration, you’ll realise that they make perfect sense together.
Restless sees these two legends dish up a snappy groove with discordant, classic house keys doing battle with almost rave-like stabs, and a plump acid house bassline at the heart of the matter. A spoken vocal seethes with attitude, while D.Ramirez’s FX trickery whirrs away in the background. It’s got that retro flavour, but it’s served up with new school cool, rather than as a pastiche-by-numbers.
On the flip, the CamelPhat remix honest in on that acid house undertone and ramps it up in fine style. The rubbery, elastic bassline and pitched down vocal are complemented deftly by ticking 808 woodblocks and rapid-fire claps, and wistful organ chords in the atmospheric breakdowns, with the result an irresistible and addictive take on the original.
