After a few series of soulful releases, we once again find ourselves diving into deeper scopes of house music with the 14th release by La Riff, who delivers to us the EP 'The Observatory'. After making his debut on FRI in 2022 with the EP 'Smooth Dancer', La Riff has returned to give us another perspective on his journey through the exploration of deeper sounds such as deep, electro, and the minimal side of deep house.
The opening track of the EP, 'Croozin', encapsulates a contemporary sound with deep chords and a tight drum rhythm, switching back and forth from cruising to rolling grooves in its arrangement.
'Sax 909' takes us on a laid-back, almost retrospective journey with the saxophone as the main element, which sits perfectly atop smooth and deep chords and percussive basslines.
'The Observatory' is an interesting excursion into electro territory while still retaining some elements of deep house. All the characteristics of deep electro sounds are present, such as 808 drums, 303 acid arpeggios, and SH-101 basslines wrapped in La Riff's distinctive production craft.
The track 'Miles', featuring veteran DJ and producer David de Barce, exudes minimalism in every way. While the track contains very few elements like drums, an acid synth line, and pulsating sub-bass, it will definitely add some spice to DJ sets. The dialogue cuts from famous jazz musician Miles Davis serve as the perfect cohesive tissue for switching up the mood in the mix.
