Sometime ago, at night, I fell into a rabbit whole where I delved into the depths of funk music. In the process, I discovered that Sir James Brown is credited with inventing funk. His most famous band was The J.Bs, a group that introduced a unique blend of spice and magic within their song writing. The band featured an extremely talented lineup, including Bootsy Collins on bass. However, Collins eventually left the J.B's with his brother due to Brown's hierarchical leadership style. According to Brown, the key to creating a successful funk song is to put all emphasis on the first beat, THE ONE. The musicians are free to improvise around this beat, but it must remain at the center of the composition. Embracing THE ONE would prove to be a game changer for funk music. When Collins and his brother joined George Clinton's band Parliament-Funkadelic, they shared Brown's concept of THE ONE with Clinton. Clinton was so impressed by the idea that he adopted it and used it as the foundation for a concept album and the accompanying live show. While Clinton is often credited with inventing funk, it is clear that Brown's emphasis on THE ONE played a crucial role in the development of the genre. For me personally, it's the symbiosis of both Brown's and Clinton's interpretation of THE ONE, which turned funk into the genre it became. After learning about Brown's contribution to funk, I decided to pay homage to him by producing songs that emphasized the second beat, THE TWO. The resulting tracks had a funky groove that I was proud of, even if I only created them for my own enjoyment. When we rehearsed for our show at Melt Festival, I included my songs dedicated to THE TWO in the setlist. During a particularly energetic performance of the song, which is now the EP's title song, our bassist Klaas alias Pocket Cosmos exclaimed, "Aaah, THE TWO is therefore the new one!" This remark gave me the confidence to present THE TWO as a persiflage on Brown's revolutionary approach.
