Yugen is an aesthetic category in Japanese culture denoting an intuitive, implied rather than explicit, obvious perception of the essence of an object. It is among the Ten Forms of Beauty described by the poet Fujiwara Teika. Zeami Motokiyo understood yugen as the presence of elegance, tranquility, and depth.
