On a safari in Namibia, The Bearded Man once nearly lost his life. He was in a rickety old stick-shift Volkswagen with three other backpackers, and they decided to check out the game preserve. They had already gotten many spectacular photos of giraffes, gazelle, and just about everything else you might expect when suddenly, they chanced upon a herd of gigantic elephants. The drove closer, and it wasn’t long before the elephants started to take notice of their presence. A large bull, in particular, seemed equal parts curious and ready to charge. Quinton was in the car with him, and he decided to get out to get a photograph from closer up. He crawled closer… and closer… and closer… Soon, it was too much, and the elephant began to charge, causing the whole herd to charge with him. Quinton ran as fast as he could towards the car, screaming the entire time, while The Bearded Man tried to start it. It sputtered on, and then he jammed it into reverse. Quinton had to run to the moving car while Carson yelled at him. He jumped in, and they reversed away from the elephants as fast as they could, narrowly escaping death. This poignant moment was the inspiration for this song.
