In Egypt the sphinx had the head of a man, the haunches of a lion, and the wings of a bird. In addition, the sphinx was viewed as benevolent, but having a ferocious strength. In this musical work, the subject, once a revered social giant who has fallen onto hard times is being coaxed into rediscovering their former treasured state.
