James Vernon serves up his fantastically intricate and stripped back techno album ‘Vansittart Estate’ on co-owned label UZ MI Records.
All releases on this London label have come from Vernon and his partner Rick Silver under a range
of aliases. Now going solo but keeping up the superbly stylish, stripped back and warm aesthetics
of the young but promising house label, Vernon lays out seven brilliantly rough edged fusions of
house, dub, techno and ambient tracks on his new album. This is an album for lovers of deep,
dreamy, dynamic sounds that are stripped back but full of character.
‘Oakley’ kicks things off with a driving but delicate deep energy mired in atmospheric mist, whilst
scintillating percussion and drawn out chords continues on the perfectly smoky dub techno cut ‘Vansittart
Estate’. ‘Vent’ comes in as an off-balance track with chunky wooden drums swimming in reverb, while
‘Small Truck’ drops into a blissed out dub house groove.
Detroit referencing ‘Swan’ and ‘Dreams 2 Nightmare’ both take you on a 10-minute excursion into organic
dub techno that will melt your mind as you get lost in its intricacies. Finally, ‘Loading Lift’ is a dishevelled
track lit up by pixelated chords, all finished in Lo-Fi excellence.
