Our second release of the year brings the introduction of ATMA (AU) a thriving producer and creative strung between both Melbourne and Thailand. The Pablo EP features 3 original productions; Pablo, Broken, Jungle Feud and a ripping remix by our brother Handsdown.
From the getgo, title track Pablo oozes tension just waiting for the right time to be released. Its deep synth presents itself with aggressive restraint early in the track and evolves with time. This weapon should be handled with care and is best situated in the night when it's time to let the crowd know that shit is about to get real. Like Jungle Feud, it's not a typical 'banger' but a considered tension builder designed to signal an evolution in the night's proceedings.
Broken was produced in 2014 during the dark Stockholm Winter. Its sounds are inspired by the short, cold days and the ominous, insular feelings that this time evoked. The cold space-like tones are offset by the groovin' bassline and rolling snares which creates a serious yet fun interplay of sounds, destined to get the crowd moving when things are starting to get hot and sweaty.
If Broken was cold, Jungle Feud is hot. The bigs drums, percussive elements and synth notes work together to evoke a tropical feeling shrouded in mystery while the bass keeps things grooving along. Jungle Feud is best served as the night progresses from the warm-up phase into something a little deeper yet it errs more on the side of a sleeper hit instead of a typical 'banger'. The tension created by the breakdown and long percussive build-up culminates in a joyful release destined to provide relief to weary aural explorers.
Handsdown then takes Pablo and flips it with his own interpretation. Whilst still maintaining the dark and ominous character of the original (which is also very similar style to his own productions), he creates another persona with the addition of the extra pads, weaving synths and glitched fills. An amazing start for Handsdown heading into 2019, with the ball well and truly on the roll.
