Triplefire Music label head, Ryan Sullivan, delivers an alternative sound to his usual progressive house excursions in this double header featuring the tracks, Dusty and Hole on his own Triplefire Music.

Dusty / Hole arrives with much excitement, especially since both tracks have been heavily featured in Ryan Sullivan's DJ sets for a good few years and, after almost a year since his last original release (Butterfly Kisses on German label Telrae - TELRAEM006). His activity however, has been visible through a slew of remixes for artists such as Chris Micali, Alfonso Muchacho, Stephen J. Kroos and Triplefire label mate Damian Yoko.

Breaking his usual patterns, in Dusty, the South African music producer unveils his minimalistic dub techno side with a deep, bass filled rhythm. Punching drums are interleaved with a rhythmic, filtering noise bed which evolves and mutates throughout the track. Echoing chords and alien sound design string the mind along when before you know it, an unsuspecting peak arrives to take it to the end. A smooth, fearless journey through darkness, Dusty is a heads down, eyes shut, techno floor moving journey.

Hole follows a similar rhythmic noise path, a theme running through both sides of the record. This time, a broken beat bass drum lead the track, with complex polyrhythms making for an interesting groove throughout. Subtle and beautiful, an electric piano takes the musical lead right from the start alongside Sullivan's own vocalisations which echo far in the distance. Once completely enveloped, the entire piece is raised and shredded by swirling noise, leading to a chaotic sonic storm, only to return to pure and gentle beauty while the rhythm section expands and grows in complexity, then slowly contracts, stripping down to nothing.

Deep, warm and entrancing, Dusty / Hole covers a lot of ground in just two songs and certainly evokes contrasting emotions in each side of the record. A wonderful feat from Ryan Sullivan.
