Almost three years have passed since Paris techno producer Paul Ritch released his first EP on Dubfires SCI+TEC Digital Audio label. Judging from his new Circus EP, his sound has moved on quite a bit. Whilst 2008s Crazy Madness / Aquarel EP and much of his earlier work, revolved around bleep-driven techno sounds, arena-sized synths, and percussion explosions, the Frenchmans groove today is much more rooted and refined.
Theres a real funk quality on the Circus EP that firmly pushes Ritch into house music territory. Paul Ritchs previous life as a hip hop sound engineer might be a contributing factor to his continued funk-fication.
Shake It is close to the Paul Ritch sound of old a wonky minimal lead, hypnotic techno loops, and plenty of FX trickery push things along nicely although the relatively calm pace and understated transitions of the track suggest Ritch may be firmly committed to a new brand of elegant techno/house funk.
Paul Ritchs choice of Daniel Stefanik for remixer certainly fits with this. As one of the new masters of the rolling tech house sound, Stefaniks work has touched many of that scenes top labels including Matthias Tanzmanns Moon Harbour Recordings, Cecille, RaumMusik, murmur, and Bangbang!. His aptly titled Berghain Edit an ode to Berlins bastion of raw techno features a dry techno loop set to maximum head spin, and a filtered bassline that wheedles its way through various frequencies, forever changing, but never quite taking centre stage. For it is always the beats and wonky percussion loops that take precedent in Berghain.

The B2 side Common Sense is particularly funky. Featuring a hip-hop styled vocal sample, rolling techno rhythms, and off kilter siren pads, Common Sense manages to sound like groovy house, tough tech house, and shuffle techno all at once. The complex drums and percussion drive the cut forwards with the kind of techno energy weve come to love and respect SCI+TEC for, but its Ritchs looped vocals and subsequent reworking of that vocal that keeps things on a house tip.
