EJU0100 Bedford Falls Players - Cool Bango
A self-proclaimed casualty of the Summer of Love 88, Solid Gold founder Mark Cooper has been involved in music for over twenty years; releasing his first club production in 1995 on a hidden gem of a compilation LP entitled Sanctified Dance from the UK Underground.
Always surrounded by talented folk, his Berkshire club night has seen the likes of Brandon Block, Terry Farley, Danny Rampling, Justin Robertson, Steve Proctor and Rocky (to name just a select few) all pass through its doors over the years; whilst his Bedford Falls Players project continues to move from strength to strength.
With a brand new EP to mark EJ Undergrounds 100th release, Mark has teamed up with piano man Bob Miles to produce the 118bpm acid-tinged chugger that is Cool Bango". Tipping their caps to Dinosaur Ls smash Go Bang!, a track that played a significant role in the early days of NYCs club scene, the duo pull the pace back whilst constructing a sense of atmospheric intensity with lush string work and well-placed vocal samples.
Engineered by Justin Drake of Peace Division, who also twiddled the knobs on previous house anthems Ballad of Hardrock and Endemics Recall the Morning Time alongside Boys Owns Terry Farley, on Cool Bango we see Mark venture into the very familiar world of his beloved Cosmic Disco vibe and come out the other end with a spattering of 303 bleeps.
The release has received huge support from the thriving local underground DJ circuit and was premiered by Eclectic Circus Wireless during their Christmas special show. To celebrate this landmark release, the original cut of Cool Bango will come in a tidy five track package with remixes from label head Paul Sawyer, heavy hitting Parisian pair Acid Washed, D:Reams Allan MacKenzie and Leo Zero.
Acid Washed, emerging from the second wave of French house, deliver a surging rework with clattering drums and extra-terrestrial sounding synth bleeps; adding a super futuristic edge to the track. Retaining the originals lush strings, dropped in at just the right moments, the pair construct a fresh nu disco vibe on their Cool Bango remix that really comes into its own in the latter half.
Ej Underground head honcho Paul Sawyer - whos recent release on Sounds of Juan just hit the Beatport techno chart at #18 - also steps up with his own interpretation: adding his signature techy touch to Cool Bango' as well as putting some extra vocal flavour in the mix.
Allan MacKenzie takes things in a more house-led direction with a remix full of pattering snares and deep, groovy basslines before Leo Zero comes in to round things off. A well known figure in the production world, Leo has remixed for a huge list of stars including Everything But the Girl, Lou Reed and David Bowie, Badly Drawn Boy, Basement Jaxx, Chicane, Dido, Underworld, X-press 2, Jack Penate, Stricken City, Wild Beasts, Florence and The Machine and Metronomy. He delivers a surging and atmospheric remix that doesnt disappoint.
