Bristol based ‘Ramu’ gets things rolling for new imprint Honey Glazed Records. A-side ‘Nightflight’ is a raw groovy house record that utilizes 60’s French jazz samples to create a warm captivating groove. Set alongside loose slinking drums the whole record has a dusty, rough around the edges feel that adds a unique sample-driven hip-hop charm and aesthetic to the house music formula. B-side ‘Placid’ keeps this charm and again uses jazz samples, but this time to create the percussion elements. This builds into a warm piano-infused hook, which melts away into a bubbling acid bass line.

Ramu is strongly influenced by a wide range of styles, but it is his love for hip-hop that really shines through on this record. Jazz samples play a lead role in both sides of the record, and the method of chopping them up and looping to create a unique groove is reminiscent of a lot of highly revered producers (Madlib, Appollo Brown, Andres to name a few). Set along side these samples Ramu also makes use of various bits of hardware. Both the Juno 60 and Micro Korg are used. This is done to a great effect on ‘Nightflight’ where a bouncing warm lead, laid down on the Juno 60, rides perfectly over the chopped up jazz samples to create an infectious lo-fi groove.

Honey Glazed Records keep true to their ethos of supporting the Bristol art scene with their projects and have enrolled an animator from local art collective ‘Lucky Bozu’ to create a video clip and artwork for Nightflight. Shows are being scheduled and things are looking busy for the end of the year for both Ramu and Honey Glazed Records.
