The 72nd release on the ever-expanding techno and tech house oriented Zmey imprint, sees label boss and prolific artist in his own right, return once more to the label he founded.

Celebrating a century of solo Beatport production credits on his eponymous imprint alongside myriad productions and remixes across a galaxy of high-profile labels: Dextrous, Plusquam and Black Hole have all played host to the Russian producer's talents.

Now giving a future proof work over to the underground house scene "Retro" sees a quintet of tracks take form. Opener, "Liqueur", is full of strong beats and rhythmic techno prowess. Vocal cuts and strong bass line make their presence felt as filtered synth lines weave an undulating path. A soft and melodic breakdown splits the track in two creating a work of intelligence and skill.

"Compass" points its way forwards with the hypnotic techno flow of metronomic beats and rising washes before a squelching and cavernous bass line plays a telling role, accompanied by rolling toms and intelligently placed spot effects. Rising to a pitched crescendo in the third movement, "Compass" has a magnetic quality.

The third offering sees Zmey turn to more tech house oriented waters as "Laughing Man" provides a backdrop of rolling percussive groove before numerous layers are added to create a work of complex, angular rhythms. A repetitive vocal sample provides a link to track title and a huge drop at the two-thirds points lifts powerfully onwards.

Following swiftly onwards, "Spion" hits its stride with a gigantic bouncing bass groove. A meticulously programmed rhythmic section provides head-shaking and club friendly grooves as layers of hi-hats and shakers provide an overall party flavour. A simple vocal element supplies further energy in a track that is punchy and dynamic.

Ending the EP, the title track itself makes its entrance. "Retro" is a full and flavoursome affair, chock fully of vibrant rhythms and cleverly worked stab chords whose cadence is smartly woven into a fabric of high-energy percussion. A pitched vocal snippet provides further imagination as it filters in and out of the arrangement to create a work that is sure to find favour in the clubs up and down Ibiza in spring an d summer 2015.

Five tracks of skill and poise from Zmey has ensured that "Retro" is a forward thinking EP that epitomises modern production techniques and a cutting edge sound.
