TOKEN50D | 2015-02-16
This sixth Ctrls record for key Token component Troels B-Knudsen sees the Danish producer continue to supply the Belgian label with a mechanical sound distinct from his counterparts Inigo Kennedy and Ø [Phase]. Formally a drum and bass producer, Ctrls has fully embraced the old school, high-tempo aesthetic Token has long championed, and this three-track Users 12” provides the label with a fresh slab of non-conformist beats designed to fuel the industrial club night. It supplies the Ghent-based operation with its first opus of 2015 which follows a resolute 12 months that saw label owner Kr!z release records by hardened UK techno devotees Surgeon and Makaton, to collaborations by Christian Wünsch and Oscar Mulero and Ancient Methods and Rich Oddie, to Inigo Kennedy’s first album for Token and the Aphelion compilation featuring music from Lucy, Rødhåd, Planetary Assault Systems, James Ruskin and Karenn.

Since his debut record in 2012, Ctrls has continually manufactured a high intensity style of minimal techno that combines super-sized beats, basslines and synths to create something so ferocious few techno imprints other than Token could handle. Both “Externalizer” and “Incoming Data” draw inspiration from the same acidic synth-line which is made to fit the rock solid 4/4 beat of the former and the frenetic rhythms of the latter. “The Disparates” on the other hand focuses its attention on box cutting percussion and a caustic vamp of synthetic stabs wrapped in a thin layer of industrial atmospheres. For more of the unrelenting sound Token forever purports, Ctrls delivers yet three more high grade, heavy hitting sessions of unrelenting techno you won’t find anywhere else.
