Kaguya EP

Danou P

Fluid Funk
FFD018 | 2024-12-13
Back on Fluid Funk with his debut solo transmission after a couple incursions as a remixer for Bralan Arias and Pete Philly & Perquisite, Rotterdam-based vibist Danou P punches in with the propulsive number, “Kaguya EP”. Exponent of a house strain both buoyant and dynamic very much akin to Fluid Funk’s positive-minded floor material, Danou P pulls out a quartet of playful dance floor heaters, designed and textured to soul-healing, hypnotic effect.

All in dreamy, ethereal pad membranes and gravity-defying boogie, lead single Kaguya is a paragon of classic piano house gone cosmic funk meteorite. Blending together Japanese-spoken vocals with straight out Chicago-style stabs and cascades of arpeggiated synths from above, the track runs the gamut from pure ethereal house to kosmische-indebted escapology, via Möbius strip-like layers of electro pulsations. Trusted to fellow label alum Simon Hinter, “Kaguya” hatches into a further jagged and ominous jazz-house treat, brilliantly extrapolating the original’s hip-swaying swagger and more intimate, late night vibe.

Trading the ascending momentum of the lead track for pure stealth bass menace and knee-buckling breaks,”Tutti To The Frutti” nevertheless remains a true Danou P joint through its elegantly minimal and prismatic synth arrangements, sprinkled with some mischievously sexy sax and FX-drenched machine hoodoo. Rounding it off with the sweat-inducing workout “Try Yo Best”, Danou P has us getting down to a fiery mix of hip-hop-laced ghetto house tropes and squelchy acid wobble, welded onto a muscular bass chassis. The most in-your-face cut of the pack, and a perfect final salvo to keep every dancer on their toes till the lights shut off.
