HEDO HYDR8 DROPS THEIR AMBITIOUS NEW EP — DEVISED FOR LATE-NIGHT
LIBERATION

Copenhagen-native Hedo Hydr8 releases EP2, a 4-track EP with 3 remixes, that elaborates on their signature high-energy sound heard on HYYDDDRR8, released earlier this year via ANBA. The incognito producer, known for their vibrant and enigmatic knitted balaclavas, is releasing EP2 shortly after their debut appearance on ZULI’s monthly NTS slot. Hedo Hydr8 describes the EP, packed with grungy rave aesthetics and catchy hooks, as ‘body music to release your pent up energy’. The work revisits old-school rave sound design
blended with the artist’s trademark high-tech sound.
They add: “We wanted to make club music that liberates itself from hierarchies and conventions in order to liberate the body — freeing its pent-up emotions.”
Hedo Hydr8’s sonics draw on a multitude of genres inside and outside of the rave environment, encompassing punishing beats, mind-altering sounds and beautiful moments of intense tranquillity.
A promising track of the EP, plays around with a catchy and naive vocal phrase, insisting that ‘Sometimes It’s Hard’. The statement, sung by a soft but mechanical female voice, is underlined by a glitchy and relentless breakbeat layered with visceral subs. The track’s weltschmerz disposition is equally seductive and destructive, which makes ‘Sometimes It’s Hard’ an unusual tune that will satisfy both seasoned ravers and a wider festival crowd.
Other noteworthy tracks on EP2 include ‘Oral Exchange’ that pleads for bedroom equality wrapped in a hardcore and noisy ‘leather and chains’ electro beat. ‘Mass Assimilation (ARC’TERYX TRACK)’ takes the listener on an ambitious breakbeat voyage, while ‘Affinity
Politics’ takes respectful and playful inspiration from diasporic genres such as Gqom, kuduro and baile funk.
Listeners can also look forward to three remixes by Madrid-based wunderkind Merca Bae, fellow Copenhagener Deb Foam and kuduro experimentalist SN Systema.
The release of EP2 and the inauguration of affected as a label happens on the 21st of October at Ved Siden Af in Copenhagen. Omon Breaker headlines the night while adventurous local bass DJs Smokey, Malika Mahmoud, Algorythm and Hedo Hydr8 themselves provide good company behind the decks.
EP2’s mesmerising cover art, a piece created for affected called ‘Crinoid Scanner’, was
made by local 3D artist Caroline Vang. The work is inspired by the alien yet familiar look of crinoid fossils. Finding her inspiration in the most alien and quirky parts of nature, Vang specializes in an experimental and surreal play of texture and shape, to challenge the line between fiction and hyper-reality.

Oral Exchange is mastered by Enyang Urbiks in Funkhaus Berlin while EP2 is mastered by SUGAR aka. Nikolaj Jakobsen in Copenhagen.
