Peer is the proud, new home of a four-track effort by Los Angeles luminary Secus. The Waves EP consists of three suspenseful soundscapes as well as a remix by Detroit DJ and producer Uun.
“Illusion” sets the tone for what one can expect from the rest of the EP. A looped sound effect shapeshifts over the course of the arrangement, cackling in bitcrushed bellows as tense atmospheres loom overhead. The chilling motif continues to distort, revealing more of itself as it wraps around the stereo image.
The title track follows, employing a maximalist approach to deliver a jarring high end meant to punctuate the peak of a sonic journey at witching hour. It ebbs and flows, releasing tension in calculated sine waves to sustain the momentum.
Resonant kick drums in “Contact” leave room for the artful noise of a sci-fi-reminiscent lead to leave a lasting impression on the listener. Uun rearranges these primal, psychedelic elements over a syncopated beat in his remix of the single, which concludes the Waves EP.
The Waves EP solidifies Peer as a permanent fixture of the borderless underground. In the grand scheme of things, it has only just begun connecting the select few who share its discerning sound philosophy.
