Blake.08 is the new project from 24-year-old Sydney resident Blake Gilray, formerly part of Sydney duo Human Movement - Blake.08 is a step in a new direction for a prolific young producer hitting a new creative height. Steadily building over the last 3 months through guest spots across Sydney’s underground scene - his white label releases have already gained the support from huge international names like Solomun, Lane8, Ben Bohmer, Jamie Jones, VONDA7 and AKA AKA - support has carried into radio with stations in Belgium, Italy, Iceland, Japan, France, Australia and Spain coming in early to support the project.
“It’s been nice to do something from the ground up that’s entirely my own vision. After some time away from Human Movement I had time to really think about my approach to music, with everything going on around COVID I started taking my car down to the local race track and racing most weekends between long weeks of working - it was my release in a pretty shit time and it created the direction for this project - I just made tunes I wanted to hear in the car and that process snowballed into something that very clearly felt like a project.
On the surface, this is music to drive to - but upon listening it’s very clear it goes much deeper. The EP draws on references from 90’s rave, breakbeat and classic house music - a record that feels like it could have been on rotation in a car's tape deck on route to the rave in 91’. Blake is a purveyor of incredible dance focused drum grooves - yet he maintains a strong connection to emotive sonics - there’s beauty on the dance floor and Blake does it better than most.
