Two of the hottest young artists around, Huxley & Sam Russo, deliver the latest instalment of Leftroom Ltd this May in ʻJammas Basementʼ. Both Huxley and Sam Russo have been garnering much attention of late, with Huxley delivering the massive ʻLet it Goʼ single for Hypercolour and Russo unleashing low slung electronic weapons for Leftroom and Air London. As Djs, the sometime flatmates have an enviable reputation. Russo, a close collaborator of Craig Richards, is an increasingly regular fixture at Fabric in London (not to mention his packed touring schedule) while Huxleyʼs name can be seen on a huge amount of impressive and eclectic line ups. ʻJammaʼs Basementʼ is a finely balanced mixture of what Huxley and Russo are known for, with Huxleyʼs skipping drums complimenting Russoʼs love of off kilter melodies perfectly. A jabbing, rounded bassline gives the track a real sense of guts – prodding the listener while vocal snippets and lurching synths ebb and flow throughout what is a brilliantly simple arrangement. On the flipside is ʻWilliamʼs Trainersʼ, a track that sees the duo indulge their shared love of 90ʼs house and garage sounds and updating classic tropes with a deft touch. Swinging, dense and forward thinking ʻWilliamʼs Trainersʼ is a rich affair that always seems to have an additional quirk around ever corner and, as such, is real ʻrideʼ of a listen. With two in form artists like Huxley & Russo, a collaboration is always an attractive prospect and ʻJammaʼs Basementʼ doesnʼt disappoint.
