“We” is the new and again highly collaborative EP by house music 'auteur' Viola Klein. Infused by Klein’s search for the futuristic dancefloor, “We” uses a call and response-like method that is part straightforward, part introspective. On the A-side, “N'aie Pas Peur (Exchange Mix)” and “Don't Be Scurred” both feature vocals by Florent Kandety (originally featured on Klein's “A Passport And A Visa Stamped By The Holy Ghost”, released on Meakusma in 2018), now delicately rebuilt in two parts by Detroit-based musician and dj Julion De'Angelo.
The three tracks on the B-side present Abdou Aziz, Abdoukhadre and Adramé Diop on the traditional Senegalese Sabar drum; the musicians are familiar from the “Exchange” release on Meakusma from 2016. Now they reveal their real Mbalax speed, to which the jazz driven musings of Klein's bold chords respond. In “We (Part One)” Klein answers with deep house understanding. Detroit native Whodat collaborates on the riotous “We (Part Two)”. “We (Another Part)” leaves four to the floor behind and tenderly opens up for the organ’s way of paying attention to what the drums are saying, giving glimpses of that futuristic floor.
Klein's production methods put her collaborators or the collaboration itself center stage, which is rare and makes for a unique kind of house music that crosses continents while getting deeper into themes of exchange and change.
“We” is a joint release by Viola Klein, Ominira and Meakusma.
