Following releases on CLUB CHAI and a residency at the Institute for Sound and Music Berlin, ACEN 008 sees San Francisco artist Lara Sarkissian make her debut on the label with ‘PENINSULA’.
Making use of Sarkissians penchant for motoric drums overlaid with Armenian percussion and evocative sound design that she explored on her 2018 ‘DISRUPTION E.P’, PENINSULA takes this a step further by introducing classical acoustic instruments and greater thematic development. The title track begins with expansive drums which provide a foundation for duduk woodwind and field recordings of lighthouse foghorns that build above. As the track progresses further melodies briefly rear their head before quickly submerging back into the mix. At the end of the track a piano accompaniment from Los Angeles based artist Mesrop is added, bringing a haunting quality to the track.
B-side “02 BTWN EARTH + SKY (Parts 1 & 2)” fades into view using a floating vocal sample, field recordings and familiar percussion. On this track the sampled melody takes centre stage, repeated over and over again, becoming richer with every repetition. More chords and longer samples emerge from the horizon and the tracks drum beat dissipates away into a spacious outro that introduces new themes whilst gradually bringing the track to a close.
PENINSULA is available across all platforms from the 5th of July.
