They may have grown up in different generations on different sides of the Atlantic, but one thing Detroit master Delano Smith and Irish up and comer Gavin Herlihy share in common is a disregard for boundaries. Deftly slipping between the definitions of house and techno, both have carved names for themselves by ignoring the laylines of either genre to imprint their own inimitable stamp on dance music. On Krypton Factor the pair link talents to deliver an EP that is typically irreverent of trends or genres. When Gavin passed a promo of the release to Ricardo Villalobos at a recent gig in Gavin’s adopted hometown of Leeds, the Chilean tastemaker dropped both mixes of the title track, Krypton Factor, within minutes. It’s an early endorsement that hints at great things for this unlikely pairing. Named after the cult British gameshow from the 1980s, the EP features two solo tracks each from each artist along with a remix of Gavin’s title track by Delano. Gavin’s original mix of Krypton Factor, is an epic journey through abstract house and techno. Propped up on a funk laden bassline, it winds it’s way through a palette of moods at times ethereal and moody at others parting the clouds to reveal moments of dancefloor beauty. Delano’s Deep Space remix takes the vocal from the original and ties it to a rolling disco bassline and house organ stabs. A soaring Moog synth solo twists and winds the track into sublime status suggesting that Delano’s remix is set for bomb status at this year’s Miami parties. Delano also supplies the third track Lost In Detroit, a tense deep techno submission that ties a looping spoken word sample to hypnotic timeless beats. A moody horn offsets the insistent funk while the male voice intones a chant about reinventing petroleum.
