Andy Compton is well know for his love of South Africa, and South Africa's love for him! He's spent a lot of time over the last 5 years touring the 'House Music Nation', mainly playing in the townships, where the love for Andy's group 'The Rurals' spans back to the 90's, With generations feeling his jazzy soulful musical vibrations.
In 2014 Andy was booked to play at a gig in Jozi, which featured resident Conga/Percussionist Bongani and Guitarist Shamrock (Both from Soweto), Andy was impressed with their raw energy and talent and suggested they have a jam the next day. The following day in Soweto the magical song 'Chillin' In The Ghetto' was born in Shamrocks small studio/home, with Mpho doing spoken word.
The name 'Sowetan Onesteps' was chosen for the group/project name as it took one step to get to the kitchen, onestep to the lounge and onestep to the studio!
Within Andy's following tours he worked a plan for the daytimes to jam with the guys as much as possible, so they could get enough music together for an album.
After 5 trips to South Africa the music was complete! They also recorded another song with Mpho ('Fathers Love')
At a gig there Andy met vocalist Asali from Kenya, and promptly recorded her for the songs 'Time','Ganga' and the spine tingling Afro Soul 'Revolutions Child', as well as backings with Shamrocks vocals. When the music was wrapped it was taken back to the Peng Studio in Bristol and arranged and edited.
Vocal talents were drafted in from Celestine in Bristol for 'I Belong', and from Ladybird in Paris for 'Life On The Moon', putting the icing on the cake!
This is the 30th album Andy has produced, and possibly the most challenging! It really captures the spirit of Africa! We really hope you feel the energy and the magic!
